Using antibiotics inappropriately allows bacteria to become resistant to them and means antibiotics may become less likely to work in the future. The effort to develop new antibiotics to kill these resistant bacteria strains is ongoing but, if unsuccessful, we could face a future in which antibiotics no longer work.
